Mirabai Chanu lifts 194 kgs to win gold

Mirabai Chanu became only the second Indian (after Karnam Malleswari) to win the gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, USA. This was after she lifted a new world record of 194kg (85 snatch and 109 C&J) in women’s 48kg category.

Contestant from South Africa wins Miss Universe crown

The woman representing South Africa won the Miss Universe crown. Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, who recently earned a business management degree, was crowned during the event at The AXIS theater at Planet Hollywood casino-resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The runner-up was Miss Colombia Laura Gonzalez, while the second runner-up was Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett.

Manmohan Singh awarded Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace

Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was chosen as the recipient of 2017 Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development. Singh received the international award, named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, for “improving India’s stature in the world” and for his “for his contributions to the cause of economic and social development”.
